🔍 Scientific name: Stilpnochlora couloniana.
🌍 Origin: Cuba, but raised in Spain.
The giant leaf grasshopper is a very striking katydid, famous for its perfect camouflage. Its appearance mimics a leaf, allowing it to hide from predators. It is an ideal species for those looking to add a touch of nature and exclusivity to their insect collection.
🔬 Main Features.
✅ Adult size: Females measure up to 7 cm and males are somewhat smaller ( 6 cm ).
✅ Coloration: From lime green to darker, with leaf-like textures.
✅ Behavior: Immobile as adults, relying on camouflage; more active and hopping nymphs.
🏡 Captive Care.
📦 Terrarium: Minimum 30 x 30 x 30 cm for an adult pair, with good ventilation and sufficient height to allow for proper molting.
🌡️ Temperature: Between 25 and 30°C.
💧 Humidity: High, spray regularly to keep the substrate moist
☀️ Lighting: They need daylight and darkness at night to maintain their natural day/night cycle.
🥬 Diet – Herbivores.
Their diet is based on fresh leaves , similar to that of phasmids (in my case, I keep them the same). I feed them:
🌿 Bramble.
🌹 Rosebush.
🐣 Captive Breeding.
🔸 Females lay between 100 and 150 eggs on suitable branches.
🔸 Incubation time: 40 to 60 days under optimal temperature and humidity conditions.
🔸 Nymphs require high humidity for successful molting and proper development.
