What other collector isopods are there?
Besides the most common genera (Cubaris, Porcellio and Armadillidium), there are isopods from less common genera that are true collector's pieces thanks to their shape or colour. This collection brings those species together:
- Cristarmadillidium muricatum: its body is covered in small spines that give it a sturdy, almost prehistoric look. It is a collector species that adapts well to captivity.
- Ardentiella sp. «Red Diablo» and «Scarlet»: fiery colours, from scarlet red to intense yellow, among the most striking in the hobby.
- Merulanella sp. «Tricolor»: a combination of three colours, usually red, yellow and black or purple.
- Nesodillo arcangelii «Shiro Utsuri»: a black and white pattern; its Japanese name means exactly that.
These are rare species, so availability varies: you can check it on each product page.
Why do some isopods change their names?
Isopods change their names because specialists revise their classification and some species are moved to another genus. In the hobby it is common to find the same species under two names. For example, those formerly called Merulanella sp. ‘Red Diablo’ and ‘Scarlet’ are now classified as Ardentiella, and Nesodillo arcangelii ‘Shiro Utsuri’ was known as Cubaris sp. ‘Shiro Utsuri’.
The name in quotation marks, such as ‘Scarlet’ or ‘Shiro Utsuri’, is not a species but the trade name of the variety or morph, which usually describes its colour. That is why, when buying collector isopods, it is worth checking the full scientific name and the variety name. General care is the same as for all other isopods: substrate with dry leaves, calcium and stable humidity.
