The rainbow stag beetle ( Phalacrognathus muelleri ) is one of the most spectacular and sought-after species in the beetle world. Native to northern Queensland, Australia, and New Guinea , but bred in Spain, this beetle is noted for its incredible metallic iridescence, with shades ranging from green, red, blue, and purple , depending on the light. Its striking appearance and behavior make it one of the most sought-after species among insect enthusiasts.

Size: Males can measure up to 70 mm , while females usually do not exceed 46 mm .
Coloration: Its shiny, metallic shell reflects different colors depending on the angle of the light, with green being the most common.

🔹 Natural environment: It lives in humid tropical forests, where the larvae develop in decaying wood with fungi.

🔸 Adults: Eat ripe fruits such as banana, pear or mango and gelatin.


🐞 Reproduction and Life Cycle

🔹 Females can lay up to 50 eggs , which hatch in approximately 10 to 14 days .
🔹 The larvae go through several stages of development (L1, L2 and L3) over a period of several months before pupating.
🔹 After completing the metamorphosis, they emerge as adults with their characteristic metallic shine.


🏡 Captive Care

Terrarium: A spacious container with flake soil substrate is recommended for larvae and a firmer substrate for adults.
Temperature: Keep above 25°C for optimal development.
Humidity: It is important to maintain an adequate level of humidity to promote the larval phase.
