🍂 The Extatosoma tiaratum , also known as the "leaf insect," is one of the most spectacular species in the world of phasmids. Its amazing camouflage, which mimics a leaf, makes it a fascinating pet for both beginners and experienced collectors.

Originally from Australia but bred in Spain, this phasmid exhibits a truly unusual life cycle. Upon hatching, the nymphs ( L1 ) measure approximately 1.5 cm and have a black pattern with reddish legs and head reminiscent of the ant Leptomyrmex erythrocephalus . This imitation is no coincidence: in their natural habitat, the eggs fall to the ground and are collected by these ants, who store them in their nests. Upon hatching, the nymphs quickly flee undetected thanks to their resemblance to their "hosts."

Over time, they change their appearance and develop their characteristic shape. Adult males reach about 9 cm in length, are winged and slender, while females can measure up to 12 cm, with a robust body and small wings. They reach maturity after a few months and, once adults, can live for another 6 to 10 months, especially the females.

For their maintenance, they require a well-ventilated terrarium, at least three times their length in height and two times their width. They prefer a humidity between 60 and 70%, and feed mainly on bramble ( Rubus ) and rose bushes.

A living jewel of camouflage and a perfect example of evolutionary mimicry, ideal as an educational and ornamental pet 🌿.
