The 26 W UVB 10.0 compact bulb is the benchmark for the bearded dragon and other reptiles from arid and semi-desert regions, which spend hours in direct sun in the wild. Its UVB output is high and supports the synthesis of vitamin D3, essential for making use of calcium and avoiding metabolic bone disease. It screws into any standard E27 lamp holder without adaptors, and it is renewed at 6 months even if it is still shining.

Which reptiles is the UVB 10.0 bulb for?

  • Bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps): the species that needs it most.
  • Tortoises: spur-thighed (Testudo graeca), Hermann's (Testudo hermanni) and Testudo marginata.
  • Small monitors, such as Varanus acanthurus.

How far from the reptile should the UVB 10.0 bulb go?

Hang the UVB 10.0 bulb 20–30 cm from the reptile. Its UVB reaches effectively to about 25–30 cm and beyond that it plummets. In a tall vivarium, or if the bearded dragon does not come up to that height, add a T5 UVB tube or an HID bulb, which spread the radiation over a larger area. With more than 100 cm of length, the usual approach is to fit two bulbs or add another system.

What if your reptile is not from an arid zone?

For rainforest reptiles there is the UVB 5.0, where we compare the three indices in a table; for the desert with maximum exposure, the UVB 15.0. Unsure about your species? Write to us.
