The 26 W UVB 5.0 compact bulb is the right choice for tropical and subtropical reptiles, and the one most often used with them. It mimics the light that filters through dense vegetation: it supplies the UVB the animal needs to produce vitamin D3 without exceeding what these species tolerate. Its standard E27 lamp holder screws straight into any lamp dome, with no adaptor.
Which reptiles is the UVB 5.0 bulb for?
UVB 5.0 is chosen for rainforest animals or those from areas where the sun arrives softened:
- Yemen chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis).
- Crested gecko (Correlophus ciliatus) and gargoyle gecko.
- Chinese water dragon (Physignathus cocincinus).
- Green iguana (Iguana iguana) while it is a juvenile.
- Aquatic and semi-aquatic turtles.
- Leopard gecko and snakes, as an extra source of UVB.
How do you install the UVB 5.0 bulb and how often should it be changed?
- Distance to the animal: 20–30 cm.
- Replacement: at 6 months, even if it still lights up, because the UVB 5.0 bulb loses its ultraviolet output before its visible light and you cannot tell by eye.
UVB 5.0, 10.0 or 15.0: which does your reptile need?
The right index is set by the species' natural habitat: the more hours of sun it gets in the wild, the higher the index.
| Index | Habitat | Species |
|---|---|---|
| UVB 5.0 | Rainforest or filtered light | Those in the list above |
| UVB 10.0 | Semi-arid areas with more sun exposure | Bearded dragon, spur-thighed tortoise, monitor |
| UVB 15.0 | Desert, maximum sun exposure | Uromastyx, tegu, adult Hermann's tortoise |
